Fauci hands over NIAID reins

Anthony Fauci served as the NIAID Director from 1984 to 2022

Catherine J. Marrazzo is the sixth NIAID director

Anthony S. Fauci, one of the world's leading infectious disease experts, has stepped down as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a part of the National Institutes of Health. Fauci served as NIAID Director from 1984 to 2022, overseeing an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose, and treat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and malaria. Fauci has served as an advisor to six presidents on HIV/AIDS and other domestic and global health issues. Under his leadership, NIAID has played a critical role in developing and testing new vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments for infectious diseases, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Catherine J. Marrazzo began her tenure as the sixth NIAID Director in the fall of 2023. Marrazzo is an internationally recognized physician-scientist with more than 30 years of experience in biomedical research and public health. As NIAID Director, Marrazzo will oversee a budget of more than $6 billion and a staff of over 5,000 scientists and support personnel. Fauci will continue to serve as a Distinguished University Professor in the School of Medicine's Department of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. In this role, he will continue to conduct research and mentor young scientists. "I am honored to have had the opportunity to lead NIAID for so many years and to have worked with so many talented scientists and staff," Fauci said. "I am confident that NIAID will continue to be a leader in the fight against infectious diseases under Dr. Marrazzo's leadership."
